Trial Pit Services Across Saudi Arabia
Survey drawings show where services and soil layers are likely to be. A trial pit shows exactly what is there. EarthScape Technologies excavates trial pits across Saudi Arabia (KSA), from our office in Riyadh, to verify buried utilities and inspect near-surface ground before design and construction.
What Is a Trial Pit?
A trial pit (also called a test pit or inspection pit) is a small, shallow excavation dug at a chosen location to expose what lies below the surface. Our team excavates by hand around suspected services, so pipes and cables can be uncovered safely, then records what is found with measurements and photographs before the pit is backfilled and reinstated.
Trial Pits for Utility Verification
Non-destructive methods such as GPR and cable and pipe locating detect and map buried services, but their depths are estimates and some services cannot be detected. Trial pits confirm the facts at critical points:
- Exact position and depth of each exposed service
- Utility type, material, size and condition where visible
- Number of cables or ducts in a route
- Services that were not detected by the geophysical survey
In a PAS 128 utility survey, utilities exposed and measured in a trial pit reach the highest quality level, QL-A.
Trial Pits for Ground Inspection
Trial pits also give a direct look at near-surface soil and rock. They let engineers see soil colour, structure, moisture and layer boundaries, and collect samples for laboratory testing. This supports shallow foundation design and is often part of a wider geotechnical investigation.
When Do You Need Trial Pits?
- Before excavation near critical or high-risk services
- Where new works cross existing utilities
- To confirm depths for design of new pipes, ducts and foundations
- When geophysical results are unclear or conflicting
- To inspect soil and take samples for testing
- To check existing foundations before extensions or renovations
Our Method
1. Locate First
Before any digging, the pit location is scanned with GPR and electromagnetic locators to reduce the risk of striking a service.
2. Permits and Safety
We work with the site team on permits, barriers and safe working arrangements, and keep the excavation area controlled.
3. Careful Excavation
Pits are excavated by hand in the zone around expected services. Depth and size are agreed with you based on the purpose of the pit and site conditions.
4. Record
Our surveyors measure the position and depth of each exposed feature, and the team records photographs, sketches and soil descriptions.
5. Backfill and Reinstate
The pit is backfilled and the surface is reinstated as agreed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are trial pits needed if a GPR survey has been done?
GPR and cable locators give estimated positions and depths, and some services may not be detectable. Trial pits expose the service so its exact position, depth and type can be confirmed at critical points.
How deep are trial pits?
Depth depends on the purpose and the site. Utility verification pits are dug to expose the target services, while soil inspection pits are agreed with your engineer. We confirm the depth before work starts.
Are trial pits dug by hand?
Around suspected services, yes. Hand excavation reduces the risk of damaging pipes and cables. The location is always scanned before digging.
What is QL-A in a PAS 128 survey?
QL-A is the highest PAS 128 quality level. It applies to utilities that have been exposed, for example in a trial pit, and measured directly.
Do you provide trial pits across Saudi Arabia?
Yes. Our office is in Riyadh and we carry out trial pits for projects across all regions of Saudi Arabia (KSA).

Reliable, Accurate Results
Where We Use Trial Pits
Soil Classification & Sampling
Providing accurate data for engineering classification, which is essential for determining soil behavior under load and moisture changes.
Hazard Assessment & Material Sourcing
Identifying potential ground risks and verifying material suitability for construction purposes.
Foundation Feasibility & Design
Directly informing the choice, depth, and design of foundations for any structure.
Utility & Underground Infrastructure
Crucial for planning and installing near-surface infrastructure like pipelines, cables, and drainage systems.
Ideal for Saudi Arabia's Infrastructure
Trial Pits offer a rapid, reliable, and hands-on investigative approach, making them perfectly suited for the diverse ground conditions and rapid construction pace of development projects in Saudi Arabia.
Direct Visual Confirmation
Provides irrefutable, first-hand evidence of subsurface conditions, minimizing interpretive risk.
Cost-Effective for Shallow Sites
Often the most economical choice for projects where foundations do not exceed shallow depths (up to 5m).
Speed and Accessibility
Excavation and backfilling can typically be completed quickly, accelerating the site investigation phase.
Material Sourcing
Allows for the bulk collection of material for specialized compaction and density laboratory tests.
Immediate Feedback
Engineers can make preliminary assessments and decisions directly at the pit location.
